Anderson, M. (2021). Creating a student support course in Casper College’s Moodle learning management system (Publication No. 28320173) [Doctoral dissertation, University of Wyoming]. ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global.
Abstract:
“This project was the creation of a student support site to address student knowledge and skills needs at CC. The purpose of the project was to create on-demand training and frequently-asked-question pages. The site can be updated and expanded as needed. Lack of knowledge is a prevalent issue impacting student success in college. Current literature focuses on success stories in student support, specifically for at-risk and disadvantaged students. However, there are gaps in the literature around best methods of communication for special populations, new students, and students with disadvantages. Further, many students struggle with the invisible rules of college and require access to information that would remediate the lack of understanding. Reticent students and double-disadvantaged students are the least likely to access campus services, indicating a need for communication that encourages students to avail themselves of available resources. The researcher used two surveys to create the initial list of questions for the FAQ pages. The researcher also developed video and text-and-image trainings for specific topics in Moodle, as well as email and file management. Student volunteers assessed the trainings and the questions. The overall results were positive and encouraging. The support site offers an agile, flexible, easily updated approach to educating students about campus life, college success, resources, and other tools. The trainings also provide students with on-demand, relevant training on how to work with the school’s learning management system, Moodle. Continued trainings and additional questions can be added to improve the overall effectiveness of the site.”
