Abstract:
“The problem addressed by this study was the possible lack of understanding of middle school English Language Arts teachers’ perceptions of the instructional and social capabilities of Google Suite for Education with Chromebooks in the classroom. The purpose of this qualitative narrative inquiry study was to explore participants’ stories and experiences, instructional practices and pedagogy, technological support and training, and beliefs about this technology regarding student learning. The technological pedagogical content knowledge framework was used as a lens to examine teacher practice and technology implementation. Through semi-structured interviews, eight middle school English Language Arts teachers’ experiences and stories were explored. Transcription data were entered into NVivo Pro to identify codes and themes. An analytical induction process was used to find patterns, codes, categories, and emergent themes from participants’ transcripts. Results indicated that this technology brought equality to the classroom, was simple to use and integrate with other digital learning platforms, supported differentiation, enhanced student-teacher relationships, and allowed the teacher to become the facilitator of learning. Also, access, quality, and distribution of instructional materials were improved, assessments and feedback were improved, students were more engaged and confident, and students’ writing scores increased. Results also showed that the district’s schools and technology department supported teachers’ needs; however, many teachers had limited knowledge of technology and needed training and professional development. Future research could include increasing population size and grades represented, utilizing an alternate research method and design, and exploring the impact of technology on students’ academic achievement and technology perceptions.”
