Choi, B. (2023). A collaborative board game as an assessment environment to evaluate teacher’s pedagogical design thinking for technology integration. Journal of Formative Design in Learning. Advance online publication. https://doi.org/10.1007/s41686-023-00075-7

Abstract:

“Games always provide explicit outcomes to be able to feasibly predict and assess a player’s performance in a rich social gaming context. This case study presents the process of designing and developing a game-based approach to assessment that aims to answer the question of how game results can be used as a useful and meaningful estimate of one’s academic performance and achievements. To this end, this study first introduces the EXPERTISE, a collaborative board game and investigates the cognitive ecology of gameplay with the special intent of discussing the possibilities of using the designed collaborative board game as an assessment environment to capture teachers’ technology integration competency from the situated cognition perspective. This study provides preliminary evidence showing that gameplay outcomes can be used to estimate teachers’ technology integration reasoning in an ecologically valid manner.”
